The 2017 International Temperate Rice Conference, held last week in Griffith NSW, has highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration between the world’s rice growers, scientists and researchers to sustain the global rice industry.
Taking place from Monday 6 – Thursday 9 March 2017, the conference brought leading rice industry experts from around the world together to share their knowledge and tackle the biggest issues facing the industry, namely water productivity, sustainability and variety development.
In his welcome address, Conference Chair Russell Ford, Manager of Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd (RRAPL) highlighted the significance of the event in bringing the rice growing community together.
“I believe it is important that we continue this tradition and keep temperate rice at the forefront of our discussions,” he said.
“It is within this climate that we have seen some of the greatest creativity and ingenuity in rice growing, and it is events like this that bring the temperate rice community together, that will ensure the continued advancement of our field.”
Attended by close to 250 delegates from Australia, Italy, Uruguay, Argentina, Spain, Japan, Africa, Turkey, Indonesia, China and the US, the conference was designed to not only showcase the latest research and developments in areas like breeding, extension, agronomy and precision agriculture, but to also foster partnerships and encourage networking between delegates.
Keynote speakers’ Dr Matthew Morell, International Rice Research Institute, and Dr Steve Linscombe, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, addressed the delegation on Tuesday, echoing the theme of collaboration when discussing sustainable development goals and strategies to make temperate rice more competitive, while Professor Melissa Fitzgerald, University of Queensland, opened proceedings on Wednesday morning with a talk on the biochemistry and genetics of aroma.
In the conference’s closing keynote address, former rice breeder Dr Laurie Lewin highlighted the common theme of collaboration expressed throughout much of the conference program, affirming the ability of events like the ITR Conference to bring the industry together.
“The International Temperate Rice Conference embodies that idea of collaboration and shared learning between all sectors of the rice industry,” he said.
“By working together, we can achieve much more than in our little country silos.”
Providing on-farm and field experiences for delegates throughout the conference was a high priority, with formalities beginning with a Farm Tour to Drew Braithwaite’s property in Benerembah on Monday. The 120 participating delegates were able to see the latest weed management, nutrition and seeding techniques as well as drone technology and new rice variety trials.
The event concluded with a trip the Rice Industry
Field Day at ‘Old Coree’ Jerilderie on Thursday, where ITR Conference delegates
joined with local growers to take part in a day of field walks, business and
innovation forums and machinery displays. Celebrity chef Zoe Bingley-Pullin was
also on hand to entertain the 400+ attendees with a cooking demonstration in
the SunRice marquee at lunchtime.
The ITR Conference is held every few years by a different rice growing country, with Brazil set to host the next gathering in 2020.
“It has been a great privilege to host the ITR Conference in Australia this year and to see so much support from local and international delegates alike,” said Mr Ford.
“We were able to share the fantastic work our Australian growers, scientists and researchers have been doing with our international peers, and gain new insight into the future of the industry from them in return.”
The ITR Conference is proudly supported by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC).

It all begins next week in the heart of Australia’s rice-growing region – Griffith, NSW.
The 2017 International Temperate Rice Conference will be bringing the issue of sustainability to the forefront when it is held in Griffith, NSW from 6-9 March.
The conference, returning to Australia for the first time in over twenty years, will bring local and international delegates together to hear about the latest research, technology and innovation in temperate rice production from industry experts, with a particular focus in this year’s program on sustainability, water efficiency and productivity.
Keynote speaker Dr Matthew Morell, Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), says the conference is an opportunity to shape the future direction of the global rice industry, bringing these vital issues into focus. In his keynote address, he will discuss how rice science is contributing to sustainable development goals, highlighting the need for agencies like IRRI to continually evolve to meet the challenges of the next 25 years.
“There is no better time in history to be an agricultural scientist. The global rice sector, for example, is facing tremendous challenges. To meet the world's demand over the next 25 years we will have to produce about 25% more rice, but this will have to be produced from less land, with less labour, with fewer inputs,” says Dr Morell.
“Regardless, I am optimistic that along with these significant challenges, come incredible opportunities to shape an equitable and sustainable rice sector that can help support a world of nine billion people.”
Dr Morell, alongside fellow keynote speakers Dr Steve Linscombe, Professor Melissa Fitzgerald and Dr Russell Reinke, will lead the conference program under the theme ‘Tradition, Technology, Productivity – A Balancing Act’.
Russell Ford, Manager of Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd (RRAPL) and head of the conference organising committee, says the conference theme was inspired by the growth and development of the industry since it was first held in Yanco NSW in 1994, and that the rice growing community should use this event to reflect on how much they have achieved.
“In the last 20 years, Australian growers have become world leaders in water use efficiency, production efficiency and environmental management,” says Mr Ford.
“Having the chance to showcase these achievements to a global audience, and to also gain knowledge from the world-class scientists who will be in attendance, is an incredible opportunity for the Australian rice community to continue improving the future sustainability of our industry.”
Designed to highlight a broad spectrum of the industry, the conference program will feature sessions on breeding, agronomy, biotic stress and crop protection, as well as precision agriculture, environment and quality and processing.

Dow AgroSciences, who brought Barnstorm™ herbicide to the Australian market in 2007, are currently developing a new active ingredient for the rice industry. Ubeniq™ herbicide with Rinskor™ active is expected to be launched in the 2018/19 rice season, but will be seen in trials and demonstrations throughout the current and upcoming seasons.
“Ubeniq herbicide will provide a unique mix of aquatic broadleaf, grass and sedge weed control in rice. For growers with herbicide resistance, Ubeniq will be a new tool to control ALS and glyphosate resistant weeds,” advised Dow AgroSciences Research Leader, Mr Greg Wells.
“Rice growers will be able to select Ubeniq as the core of their weed management program with the option to tank-mix when needed to fit a field’s unique needs. With broad-spectrum weed control, and excellent crop safety, Ubeniq will prove to be an integral tool in Australia’s rice industry,” added Mr Wells.
To mark this breakthrough in weed management in rice, Dow AgroSciences will be the Platinum Sponsor of the upcoming International Temperate Rice Conference. In its 6th year, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation are bringing to Griffith NSW, a compilation of experts to advance research, technology and innovation in temperate rice production.
“We are delighted to have Dow AgroSciences as a partner for this global conference. As a leader in agricultural research and development, and with their new active ingredient for weed management in rice, it is a perfect match,” confirmed Russell Ford, Manager of Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd and head of the ITR Conference organising committee; March 6-9 Griffith Exies Club with keynote speakers Dr Matthew Morell, Dr Steve Linscombe, Dr Russell Reinke and Professor Melissa Fitzgerald, as well as Mr Greg Wells from Dow AgroSciences.
